Penang Shopping – Wired Destinations

Penang is a great place for shoppers. As the town displays a diverse mix of cultures and ethnic groups, there is a wide variety of shops to choose around Penang. Tourists can obtain pretty much anything here; from Chinese arts and calligraphies to Indian spices and Malay handicrafts. Most of the traders in Penang can speak English, so you don’t have to worry about communication here.

There is a large selection of Penang shopping venues throughout the city. Travelers have a choice from luxury shopping at huge shopping malls or inexpensive shopping at many of the markets located around town. The night market is a popular Penang shopping area for the locals; and with some bargaining skills, you might get your favorite items at much cheaper prices.
Penang shopping malls open from 11am to 10pm. Markets start early in the morning. Do bargain hard in markets.

Arts and crafts

One of the major crafts found is Penang batik. Batik is a kind of patterned cloth drawn by using a unique type of paint. Most of the paintings use flowers in colorful and beautiful themed patterns. Rattan Ware is another type of craft in Penang, especially around the Seberang Jaya area. Rattan is similar to bamboo and is used in producing local furniture and products such as baskets, chairs, mattresses and a lot more. Pewter Ware in Penang is also famous for its impressive patterns, making it an excellent and unique gift.

Penang does not actually produce its own precious gems or metal, but tourists can still find many jewelry shops and goldsmiths. These jewels and precious stones are sometimes extracted from the states of Kedah. They come in many designs and have gained popularity in the past few decades with the increase of shops around Penang.
Penang has a lot of dried foods and unique snacks on offer. Nutmeg is a popular product that can be found in town, especially in Balik Pulau. It is a type of sliced fruit or dried tidbits with a unique smell and taste. Tau Sar Peah is a small and round biscuit made of mung bean and has a bit of sweet and sour taste. This is a traditional snack which was first introduced over a hundred years ago and still exists in Penang. It can be easily found in local stores around Penang and other nearby states, such as Kedah.

In Penang, there are plenty of book stores. You can get some old books and secondhand books from small family-run bookstores around Georgetown. As for conventional bookstores, there are numerous publications ranging from fiction, non-fiction, textbooks, magazines and newspapers.
Computer and Electronics
Penang, Bayan Lepas and Georgetown are particularly popular as electronic manufacturing spots. Therefore, tourists can find the latest models of mobile phones or electronic gadgets easily around town. Cameras, video recorders, music players, cell phones and a lot more are found in communication shops and Penang shopping malls.
