Bang Pa-In Palace
Constructed during the reign of King Prasat Thong, it was long before Bang Pa-In Palace became grand and graceful. It is recorded in a chronicle of Ayutthaya that the Aisawan Thiphayaart, the only royal residence, has been in existence since 1632. Little is known whether the palace was in use till the fall of the kingdom.
Hundreds of years later, the place found its revival by King Mongkut of Rattanakosin Era. New mansions beatified the declining site, many of which were built by his successor, King Rama IV. Today, the buildings of various styles embrace the renovated Aisawan Thiphayaart. There is a Neo-Gothic style Buddhist monastery called Wat Nivet Dhamma Prawat on the other bank of the Chao Phraya River.
Chao Sam Phraya National Museum
The museum is situated on Rochana Road. Being named after the king who founded Ratchaburana temple, various works of art and famous carved regal attire representing the Ayutthayan civilization are well-preserved. Also, relics of Lord Buddha and his bronze images are displayed in this museum. An exhibition of Ayutthaya’s folklore presents the local’s way of life in the past with many historic tools. The museum is open every day except Monday and Tuesday and on national holidays from 9:00 to 16:00.
Elephant Kraal
As the capital of Ayutthaya was expanding; King Dhammaharaja of Ayutthaya ordered relocation of kraal to the outside of the islet. This unique structural square of teaks was formerly used to entrap herded wild elephants. Only the strongest animals would be selected for war.
